Arc Trooper
As I have already
established, a visual element which can be sufficient to indicate intelligence
is that of technology. I therefore decided to have the first character's
membership to this attribute's faction be suggested solely the devices or
accessories he would possess.
This, however,
presents a problem: the visual message of a simple accessory or detail would
run the risk of being drowned-out by the character's other features, and thus becoming
ineffective. Which brings us to another visual language principle: emphasis.
Ever since the
first known cave paintings, such as
the ones at Lascaux in France, artists have used emphasis to draw attention to
certain details of their work and away from others. In publications such as Shadowline:
The Art of Iain McCaig (2008, Iain McCaig)[28], or
on the cgsociety.org forums[29],
it is shown how emphasis can be employed through the use of nearly any visual
element, from lighting to colour to composition.
