I believe the greatest challenge from standpoint of the creative process was to design a face for the character which would give off a look of intelligence, while at the same time not losing the look of a bird, which typically possess a sort of expressionless blank stare. The solution was a very small detail: curving the shape of the beak into a very thin smile. This not only resolved the two issues, but also gave him an air of faint madness, which I think complemented the look well.
